And how you can use this to help
For many people, September can feel like a rest. It holds a certain energy. Granted, it's not exactly the bright, bustling lights of the New Year in January, but it still carries the same pull towards a fresh start and reflections. You might be feeling this way now and wondering why.
Are you finding yourself craving more structure and organisation? Are you feeling the pressure to suddenly tidy up loose ends, or perhaps you've discovered a sudden burst of energy and focus on having a deep clean at home or work, reorganising your environment and having a good clear out.
Whatever it is, September offers the gentle nudge to start to relook and reset your priorities - and this can include your mental health and wellbeing too.
So, why does September feel like a natural reset?
After the slower pace or chaos of summer, September often brings structure back into our lives. Work routines resume, schools restart, and there’s a collective sense of settling back into rhythm. This return to order can help us feel more grounded.
There's also no getting away from it; the change in the air is undeniable — can you feel it?
Shorter evenings are on the horizon, cooler mornings are approaching, and the subtle arrival of autumn is on its way. Our minds and bodies often respond to this external shift with an inner desire to reset. It’s nature’s way of reminding us that change is inevitable and necessary.
For many, September was once the start of a new school year. Fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, the sense of possibility. That feeling doesn’t leave us in adulthood — it lingers in our memory and shapes how we approach this time of year. This is reinforced further if we are also supporting children or young people to return back to school or education in September after the long, summer break.
After the fullness of summer, September offers an invitation to pause and ask: What do I need for the months ahead? What do I want to focus on as we move towards the end of the year? Even small moments of reflection can bring clarity and calm.
Use September as a springboard to reset your wellbeing goals and routines - ask yourself what you need ahead of the winter period and how you can I put things in place to support yourself through this time ahead? Preparation is key so use this time to really think about what helps you, and also what doesn't and ensure you plan to minimise these things.
If you’ve been feeling that September pull to reset, then if you can, try to lean into it. This is a season that invites us to take stock, recalibrate, and gently move towards what feels right for us. It doesn’t have to mean a big overhaul — sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest difference. Try not to let this overwhelm or create pressure within you. Take a breath and navigate forward, one step at a time.
If this resonates, I’ll be sharing more thoughts and support around finding calm, building resilience, and navigating life’s demands in the months ahead.
